Lara Phillips [Biography]

Lara Phillips

Lara Phillips is a young and aspiring oil painter, raised and living in the small coastal village of Wembury in Devon.
From a young age her passion has always been to draw and paint, which then led her to enrol in the Plymouth College of Art and Design where she excelled. The Art College allowed for the development of her professional creative journey to begin and discover her natural flare and passion for oil painting. From taking regular life drawing classes she soon discovered her love for figurative paintings, focusing on form, structure and colour.
Lara then honed her skilled into producing a number of classically influenced commissioned pieces. Her capabilities to express the souls and personalities of the animals have proven evident due to the overwhelming emotion resulting in tissues needed upon collection.
Lara is now focusing her work on the beauty which has surrounded her all her life. Her love for her local surroundings has enabled her to paint and capture the essence of Devon wild and farm life. She enjoys to capture the unique personalities and quirks of the animals she paints which is drawn out through her expressive painting style. Each individual painting is a journey not knowing the end result. A never-ending balance between chance and control when making brush strokes. She has over the years developed her style of painting through her use of layering to form a level of depth to her work putting emphasis on the structure, from defined loose brush strokes and adding texture by using pallet knives. The use of vivid and complimentary background colours help to enhance the essence of the animal bringing light on the subject.
From discovering she is highly dyslexic, this revealed Lara’s strengthened abilities for visual thinking and visual problem-solving. She considers her dyslexia to be gift not a disability allowing her to view the world in a different light. This has enabled Lara’s capabilities to identify shape and colour to be heightened, which is emphasised through her painting technique focusing on structure and juxtaposing vivid colours. Her work is predominantly large scale to allow the freedom and ability to create expressive brush strokes.
