Marie Louise Wrightson [Biography]

Marie Louise Wrightson

Host Galleries are excited to introduce this artist into the gallery for you to view in the coming new year.

Born in Lincolnshire but has been based in Scotland for the past twenty years, her painting is a way of life and continues to surprise and delight art lovers and collectors alike.

Marie Louise graduated from Jordanstone School of Art in Dundee, gaining a BA(hons) and Masters in Fine Art in 2005.

Marie’s work is inspired from cartoons, magazines, fairytales and comic books. Which has allowed her style to take it's unusual twist.

Marie paints from her summer house studio, which has become a shrine to the great British seaside, her first love. Collected over many years, numerous seaside novelties which make there way into a variety of her paintings.

'Like many people, I have been influenced and inspired by fairy tales, cartoons, films and children’s books; especially the Alice in Wonderland stories. With cautionary messages and wonderful worlds in which to escape, little Alice, the Mad Hatter and The Queen of Hearts have always created an endless fascination and curiosity of wonder for me. With my work I have explored a more grown up Alice, an Alice who is still full of wonder and surprise but who also embraces all the delights of Wonderland during her fantastical journeys. An all important part of the stories, is for me the visual attraction of the books illustrations. I have always looked at the illustrations first and read the words later, “partly due to my dyslexia”, but also because I am always completely absorbed by the fabulous drawings within the books. For me the drawings bring the characters to life, allowing the reader to fall down into the rabbit hole with Alice and visualise Wonderland for them self.'

Marie has worked on solo and group exhibitions throughout the UK, including exhibitions at the Royal Scottish Academy.
